If you are planning Delhi to Amarnath Yatra , here is everything you need to know—from registration and travel routes to what to pack, how to stay safe, and whether your bones will forgive you afterward.

History and Significance of Amarnath Yatra

To ensure that no living being heard the divine conversation, Lord Shiva left behind all his companions on the way. He left his bull Nandi at Pahalgam which is the starting point of the Yatra. He then released the Moon from his hair at Chandanwari and threw away his snakes at Sheshnag. He left his son Lord Ganesha at Mahagunas Parvat and his five elements at Panchtarni before entering the cave.

The cave was hidden until it was rediscovered in the 19th century by a Muslim shepherd, Buta Malik. Since then, the management has been shared between the Hindu priests and the descendants of the shepherd. The natural ice Lingam that forms inside the cave every year is believed to be Lord Shiva himself.
